college: [14] College comes from the same source as colleague. Latin collēga, literally ‘one chosen to work with another’, a compound based on the stem of lēgāre ‘choose’. An ‘association of collēgae, partnership’ was thus a collēgium, whence (possibly via Old French college) English college.
